This post is a bonus. When lightning strikes, it strikes hard. Thomas, an online connection of mine, suggested I listen to the song attached to the end of this post entitled, Medicine, by Joji. First off, I live in the Baroque era, and if it’s not Bach I’ve never heard of it. Wow, there is a lot to unpack here. I have included the video and the lyrics at the end of this post for you.

Thomas suggested that I watch this video in connection with my last blog on the Truth Step 1: Giving Up. The applications are amazing. From a musical standpoint, the song is inherently depressing as it’s in the melancholic key of G Flat major, or at least that what my ear tells me (someone confirm or deny this). Melodically, it wanders and never feels anchored down at all, almost with a touch of escapism in the darting upward leaps on the ironic lines “pick it up up”. In form, I would say that the song could best be characterized by minimalism, with it’s repetitive melodic and harmonic cadences, feeling like it’s going somewhere but never getting there.

This ties into the message of the song. The subject of the song, the party girls, have the message of “picking up” their drugs of choice (alcohol, partying, and craziness) running through their heads constantly. While this surreal life is going on, their brains are telling them “don’t be what you want to”. The song could go on and on without stopping because their lives have taken on this new endless identity – drink, party, be crazy, and repeat. They operate on the surface and there is no depth at all. They are popular but completely alone in the end. Emptiness personified.

In my opinion, the song isn’t speaking simply to party girls, but rather to humanity in general. We chase the things that we think make others like us, but the byproduct of this fool’s errand is that we all become the same in the process. Uniqueness is lost. What are you chasing? What can you give up? What will set you free? THE TRUTH. Be yourself and don’t pick up whatever medicine kills your uniqueness. I love art, if you can’t tell, andt this song and this video perfectly sum up everything from my post this morning. Enjoy the cautionary tale.
